Oak Park Estates boasts towering oak, pecan and elm trees, rolling terrain, an abundance of greenbelt areas, and the picturesque beauty of Five Mile Creek meandering through the center of the neighborhood. The homes in Oak Park Estates are a representation of splendid 1950's and 1960's style, design and detail. Custom builders, such as W.P. Richards and Perry Greenspan, built classic traditional ranch and contemporary style homes that suited the needs of the buyers, with many of these lovely homes being built on large, terraced creek lots.
Vernon and James Smith developed Oak Park Estates in the mid 1950's. At the time of development, Oak Park Estates was marketed simply as "Oak Cliff's Finest Neighborhood". Vernon and James were the sons of local architect Hoke Smith and both held degrees in architecture from Texas A&M University. The original development contained over 280 custom-built homes built between 1955 and the mid-1960's and located on the northern side of Five Mile Creek. The boundaries of this section of Oak Park Estates are Kiest Blvd. to the north, Pentagon Pkwy. to the south, Rugged Drive to the west and Navajo Drive to the east. Approximately another 280 homes were erected on the southern side of Five Mile Creek between the early 1960's through the early 1970's. The boundaries of this section of Oak Park Estates are Five Mile Parkway to the north, Whitedove Dr. to the south, Ovid Ln. to the west and Lost Creek Dr. to the east.
Oak Park Estates borders the southern section of Kiest Park in Dallas, which is one of Dallas' largest public park facilities. The park boasts beautiful stone structures built during the Works Progress Administration(WPA) era and has walk/bike trails, tennis courts, baseball fields, a recreation center, and picnic areas. Downtown Dallas is a mere 8 miles away and the historical Bishop Arts District is 4 miles from Oak Park Estates. With all it has to offer, Oak Park Estates is easily one of Dallas' "hidden gems".
